The bodhi tree

The site of the bodhi tree is now the Mahabodhi Temple in a small rural town called Bodhgaya in Bihar, Northern India. A stone fence now surrounds the current bodhi tree and supports are used to preserve the tree.

Underneath a bodhi tree simialr to this, it is believed that prince Siddhartha meditated and attained enlightenment around 630 BCE. The tree pictured here is believed to be a direct descendant of the actual Bodhi tree under which Sidhhartha meditated.
